Case Study 1

ds

In August-September 2014 Tailor Made Radio was commissioned to build a new satellite studio for  Academy FM (Folkestone). The studio is located in the town centre at the Academy’s Sixth Form  (known  as the Glassworks). The location is couple of miles from the original pair of studios, which  are still the  central hub of the station and where the transmitter is located. Via microwave digital link  the audio is  linked via high quality low delay codecs. Further, the satellite studio has it’s own RCS  playout system  which is kept in sync via headsite. Here’s what Dave Sharp, the station manager,  had  to say about this project:

David Cunningham designed and constructed all three studios here at  Academy FM. He also gives us 24/7 technical support.

I’ve worked in radio for nearly 25 years, including long stints at the BBC, at a leading production  company, and in radio education – I’ve used a LOT of studios and dealt with a LOT of engineers.  David is excellent at giving you exactly what you need, in the space required, at a very competitive  cost. He is different to other engineers in that he doesn’t just tell you what he thinks you need, but he listens to your requirements and communicates constantly.

Our studios have been incredibly reliable, despite being built to a tight budget, and our new Glassworks studio is a great example of how he can make a studio perform well to strict requirements and look good as well. He project-managed the whole build, including collaboration with a large number of suppliers such as the building’s owners, alarm companies, electricians, carpet fitters etc. It was all finished on time and on budget.

Another thing that’s really helped us out is that David is experienced in sourcing non-critical equipment second hand – this has helped keep the costs down and everything has been perfectly reliable. His technical support is also excellent – he has kept our radio station on the air for nearly 4 years.  If you’re reading this you’re probably thinking it’s been written by David himself…!… it hasn’t, and if you want my feedback in person then just give me a call at Academy FM Folkestone.
